Year 9 Options

Welcome to the Year 9 options process. We hope this page will provide you with all of the information you need.

An electronic copy of the options booklet has been emailed to you, but you can also download an additional copy from the link to the right hand side of your screen.

Your child’s tutor will help you complete the options form in your tutor RAP meeting and your child’s tutor will submit the form following this meeting.

Tutor RAP meetings will be arranged by your child’s tutor and they will contact you to agree a suitable time.

Option choices

At Trafalgar School we recognise that every child learns differently and have designed our curriculum accordingly. We have sent home a personalised options choice form for your child.

All students have the opportunity to study four subjects in their options choices but we ask that five choices are made, in case one subject for any reason is to run.

One subject selection must be at least one of History, Geography, French or Spanish. (Students who have not studied a language in year 9 should select History or Geography.)

The videos below give a flavour of each subject on offer and further details can be found in the options booklet (available to download here).

Core Curriculum

Everyone studies these subjects until the end of Year 11 and these videos will give you a flavour of what is to come:

Filling out the options form

Your child’s tutor will call you this week to arrange a 30-minute meeting with you and your child next week.

In this meeting, you and your child will have the opportunity to talk through the choices and any questions you may have. Your child’s tutor will fill in the options form with you during this time.

This meeting will be held via School Cloud.

Ordinarily we would invite you onsite for these meetings, but given the current situation, sadly we are unable to do this. We have purchased new software which will enable you to attend your virtual appointments with ease!

To attend your appointment, please follow the instructions below:

1) Browse to

2) Log in: Fill out the details on the page then click the Log In button*

3) Your appointment time will be displayed and an hour before a link will appear, which when you click on it, will take you to your meeting.

*Any problems logging in please call us and ask for the student services team.

Alongside their core offer, students study 4 options choice. One of these must be history, geography, French or Spanish.

We ask students to make 5 choices in case we are unable to run a subject or a preference does not fit on the student’s timetable. All the subjects that a student’s selects should be one that they would be happy to study.

We run three options path ways but, in the options pack, sent to you in the post you will have only the pathway most appropriate to your child.

Don’t worry, this doesn’t happen often. If this is the case we will call you and discuss this with you.

You can find the email for the lead member of staff in a department on the subject page of the options booklet.

We aim to let students know by the end of June 2021. This will be sent home to parents / carers

We allow students to request a change to their choices in the first two weeks of the Autumn term. If your child feels they have made the wrong choice in this time, please chat to your child’s tutor who will be able to help.

If you child has been benefitting from additional literacy support, Mrs Leason-Bently has evaluated their progress and has suggested additional literacy would give your child the best chance of being successful in their other subjects. Should you wish to discuss this further you can contact the SEN department [email protected]

No, in the EBACC option selection you would choose history or geography.

Your child’s tutor is in the best position to discuss this with you. They will be in contact with over the next week to arrange a RAP meeting during which you will be able to discuss the options process.
